Reimbursement on Genetic Services Provided by Nurses

The ISONG Professional Practice Committee conducted a survey in 2020 to assess the current state of billing practices for genetic services among registered and advanced practice nurses in the United States, in hopes of providing insight to increase reimbursement nationally, thereby improving the provision of care.

Registered and Advanced Practice nurses providing clinical genomic care in the United States were eligible for this survey.  Fifty-five nurses (9 RNs, 44 APRNs) completed this survey, representing 24/50 states and US jurisdictions.  Though billing practices vary by state, facility, and by insurer, we identified the most common billing codes utilized, the percent of services reimbursed by procedure codes, and barriers to and challenges with reimbursement.
