ISONG Annual Research Grant 2009-2010

The ISONG Research Committee is pleased to announce that the call for proposals for the 2009-2010 ISONG Research Award is now open. This annual grant of $1,500 (maximum) for a period of up to 12 months is given to one recipient who is the Principal Investigator. We are very pleased that a second grant is also available to ISONG members through the generosity of the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. This grant is also for $1500 and we thank the University of Pittsburgh for this kind support.

The awarding of the grant is contingent on the successful peer review of the grant application by members of the ISONG Research Committee. If you are submitting a full proposal, you must first submit a letter of intent indicating your proposed grant topic by August 16th (Date 1 in the guidelines below) to Lorraine Frazier. The complete grant proposal is due on September 1, 2009 (Date 2). The guidelines apply to both awards. Please contact Lorraine or Maggie Kirk with any questions.

About the ISONG Nursing Research Grant Program

PURPOSE

The purpose of the annual ISONG Nursing Research Grant award is to support research related to genetic nursing practice or that which contributes to the development of genetic nursing science. Research areas should reflect clinical, professional and societal issues in genetics that impact health and nursing practice related to genetics. All relevant research areas will be considered; however, priority will be given to studies that address genetic nursing practice and/or health outcomes related to genetics.

FUNDING AWARD

Traditionally, ISONG funds one award, $1,500 (maximum), for a period of up to 12 months. This annual grant award is given to one recipient who is the Principal Investigator. The awarding of the grant is contingent on the successful peer review of the grant application by the ISONG Research Committee.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Applicants must:
  1. Be a registered nurse with a current license
  2. Be a member of ISONG.
  3. Submit a completed research package, including the letter of intent, by the announced deadlines.
  4. Be ready to initiate the research project as soon as funding notification is received.

RESEARCH FUNDING

  1. Funds for this annual grant are provided by the International Society of Nurses in Genetics, Inc.
  2. This annual small grant award may be used as "seed" monies for conducting a pilot study or for conducting an ongoing research investigation with promising contribution to genetic nursing science and genetic nursing practice.

FUNDING GUIDELINES

  1. Funding is to be used for research-related expenses only (e.g., for a research assistant, study supplies, and study equipment).
  2. Funds may not be used for secretarial support, indirect costs, tuition, investigator's salary, travel expenses, or attending conferences.
  3. Unused funds must be returned to ISONG.
  4. Major changes in study plans must be requested in writing to the Co-Chair of the Research Committee.
  5. Evidence of appropriate ethical approval (Institutional Review Board or equivalent) must be provided to the Co-Chair prior to receiving funding.
  6. The Principal Investigator should assure that ISONG support is acknowledged in publications and presentations resulting from the award.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The ISONG research grant is intended to support a clearly designed genetics nursing research project. Selection of the recipient of the award will be based on the following criteria:
  1. Relevance of the research project to the area of genetic health
  2. Scientific merit
  3. Qualifications of the applicant and the likelihood of completing the project
  4. Adequacy of facilities/resources available to support the research
  5. Potential benefits to the health of individuals and families with, or at risk for, genetic health conditions
  6. Budget considerations
  7. Following all directions and criteria for submission of the grant

APPLICATION DEADLINES

Three deadlines/requirements must be met in order to qualify for the ISONG Research Grant. These dates will be announced when the annual call is opened. The absence of a letter of intent, faxed or incomplete applications and a late submission of either the letter of intent and/or the completed application will disqualify the applicant. These submissions will neither be considered nor will they be returned by the ISONG Research Committee. ISONG's Research Committee will be responsible for selection and will submit the name of the award recipient to the Board of Directors for approval. The grant award will be announced at the Annual ISONG Education Conference, in the ISONG Newsletter, and on the ISONG Website. The recipient will be notified prior to the conference.

Date 1: Letter of Intent

    1. Please notify the Co-Chair of the Research committee, Lorraine Frazier, noted below, via email, by the given date, if you intend to apply for this year's grant. Include the general topic area of your grant submission.

Date 2 (midnight EST): Applications due

    2. Mail 1 hard copy of the complete grant, including required sections (1-6), to the Co-Chair of the Research committee. AND
    3. In addition, an electronic copy of the complete grant must be sent, via email, in attachment format, to the Co-Chair of the Research committee, by midnight EST on the same date (Date 2). If the appropriate ethics/Human Subjects approval is not available in electronic format, please indicate this in your electronic submission. The attachment must be titled ISONG, year of application, and applicant's last name (Example: ISONG2008-Frazier).

Send to: Lorraine Q. Frazier

GUIDELINES FOR PREPARATION OF GRANT PROPOSAL

Submitted proposals MUST include:

A. A one-page (single-spaced) abstract of the proposal. The abstract must include problem statement/specific aims; significant background of the research topic, including relevance of the study to genetic nursing, and methods. Methods should include sample size, research design, and planned data analysis.

B. The proposal narrative must be limited to no more than 4 pages (minimum print size=12 pt.); narratives exceeding this limit will not be considered. References, appendices, budget, timeline and biosketches are not counted as part of the 4-page limitation. The narrative should address the following:

  1. Problem statement/specific aims: discuss the broad, overall goal(s) and what the specific research proposed in this application is intended to accomplish; state the research questions/aims or hypothesis to be tested.
  2. Background and significance: briefly address the background leading to the present application; critically evaluate existing knowledge and identify scientific or methodologic gaps that the project is intended to fill. Identify the importance of the research in terms of its contribution to genetic health nursing and potential for leading to further research. Summarize the theoretical framework as appropriate.
  3. Research design and methods: describe the research design and procedures to be used to accomplish the specific aims of the study. Include how the data will be collected, analyzed and interpreted. Describe the potential limitations of the study. This section should be organized in the following manner: design, setting, sample, procedures, data analysis plan, and limitations.
